AHUs are like a playground for microorganisms, especially in the damp and dark environments they often operate in. These microorganisms can include bacteria, mold, and fungi. If not properly managed, they can significantly reduce air quality and impact the health of those in the building.

Biofilms are clusters of microorganisms that stick together and adhere to surfaces. In AHUs, these biofilms can form on coils, drain pans, and other components.

Biofilm significantly decreases efficiency of the AHU by obstructing airflow and heat exchange, and also leads to unpleasant odors, poor indoor air quality, and further microbial growth throughout the building.

Cleaning and maintaining AHUs to control microbial growth is an expensive job. Traditional cleaning methods can be labor-intensive, and are not fully effective in removing all the biofilm, leading to a quick recurrence of the problem.

Additionally, in order to get rid of biofilm growth that has accumulated overtime, high-pressure washing is required; which often leads to premature failures.
